This treatment was developed five years ago and patient 0 was a little girl who was just 48 hours away from complete organ failure. She started showing signs of recovering soon after receiving the first cell therapy and has now been free of cancer for the last 5 years.

The name of the treatment is CAR-T and it works by genetically modifying the T cells in a person. First of all, a handful of T-cells are extracted from the blood of the patient.

Then a chimeric antigen receptor is added to these cells. Now the modified CAR-T cells are reintroduced in the patient’s body via the blood stream. These newly equipped cells take on the task of hunting down and killing the cancerous cells. This treatment works in the same way as vaccination and once a person has received treatment for particular cancer their body will keep fighting that cancer for the rest of their life.

Though these two are the signs of the therapy working, yet they are highly dangerous situations and should be handled very carefully.
